The HbA1c (A1C) test is a blood test that reflects your average blood glucose level over roughly the previous three months. It is commonly used in screening, diagnosis and monitoring of type 2 diabetes.
Do I need to fast for HbA1c?
HbA1c itself does not require fasting. This is different from a fasting plasma glucose test, for which fasting is required.
How is HbA1c interpreted?
For non-pregnant adults, an HbA1c below 5.7% is generally in the normal range, 5.7%–6.4% is in the prediabetes range, and 6.5% or above is in the diabetes range. When there are no clear symptoms, an abnormal result generally needs confirmation according to clinical guidance.
Can HbA1c ever be misleading?
Yes. Conditions that affect red blood cells or haemoglobin can alter HbA1c results. Your doctor may use other glucose tests when HbA1c is not suitable or when results do not fit the clinical picture.
One number is not your whole diabetes plan
Individual targets differ. If you already have diabetes, discuss your HbA1c result and treatment target with your doctor rather than changing medicines on your own.
