A complete blood count (CBC) is one of the most commonly requested blood tests. It measures several types of cells and related values in your blood and can give your doctor useful information about your general health.
What does a CBC measure?
A CBC commonly reports red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, haemoglobin, haematocrit and measurements related to red-cell size. A CBC with differential can also report the different types of white blood cells.
Why might a doctor request a CBC?
A doctor may request a CBC as part of a health assessment or when evaluating symptoms and conditions such as anaemia or infection. The test can also be used to monitor some medical conditions and treatments.
Does an abnormal CBC mean I have a disease?
Not by itself. Results need to be interpreted alongside your symptoms, medical history, medicines and other investigations. Reference ranges can also differ between laboratories.
Do I need to fast?
A CBC itself usually does not require special preparation, but you may be asked to fast if other blood tests are being taken at the same time. Follow the instructions given for your particular set of tests.
